A SMALL CARD. IMPORTANT RIGHTS.

A practical Know Your Rights tool

The Red Card was created by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC). It is a wallet-sized tool designed to help people understand and assert constitutional rights that apply to everyone in the United States, regardless of immigration status.

Carry it. Know it. Share it.

The card can be carried in a wallet or purse and used during an encounter with immigration enforcement. It can help a person communicate that they are exercising their right to remain silent and other constitutional protections.

The Red Card is available in both ENGLISH and SPANISH from ILRC

The Red Card provides general information, not individualized legal advice.

WHY CARRY ONE?

Be prepared before an encounter happens

Knowing your rights in advance can make an intimidating situation easier to navigate. ILRC encourages people to learn how the card works before they need it.

Keep it with you

Carry a Red Card in your wallet, purse or another place where it is easy to reach.

Know what it says

Read the card and become familiar with the rights it describes before an encounter occurs.

Share the resource

Print extras for family, friends and community members so more people have access to Know Your Rights information.

KNOWLEDGE TRAVELS THROUGH COMMUNITY

A resource is most powerful when people share it

Red Cards work because community members, advocates, families, businesses and organizations put reliable Know Your Rights information directly into people's hands.

Make the information visible and easy to find

HRA Santa Fe can help by making Red Cards available, pointing people to trusted ILRC resources, and encouraging community members to carry cards and share extras. The goal is not fear. It is preparation, confidence and access to trustworthy information.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

What the Red Card helps you communicate

You can remain silent

You can choose not to answer questions about your immigration status, birthplace or how you entered the United States.

Your home has protections

The card explains constitutional protections involving entry and searches of your home and the importance of a judicial warrant.

You can ask to speak with a lawyer

The card reminds you not to sign documents before you have had an opportunity to seek legal advice.

You can show or hand over the card

ILRC explains that the card may be shown through a window, slid under a door, or presented during an encounter to communicate that you are exercising your rights.

Knowledge is something we can share.

Help HRA Santa Fe make trustworthy Know Your Rights resources visible and accessible throughout our community. Carry a Red Card, share the resource, and encourage others to be prepared.
