Safer Space Places

What is HRA’s Safer Space Place Commitment?

A Safer Space Place Commitment (sometimes called a Safe Space or Safer Place Commitment) is a set of shared principles or guidelines that an organization, group, or event adopts to ensure that everyone—especially people from marginalized or vulnerable communities—feels welcomed, respected, and protected from harm.

Because no space can be guaranteed 100% “safe,” many groups use the term “safer space” to emphasize an active, ongoing effort to reduce harm, address oppression, and promote inclusivity.

At its heart, this commitment recognizes that power dynamics, biases, and systemic inequalities can create barriers to full participation. By acknowledging this reality, the commitment asks each person and/or business to take an active role in dismantling discrimination, harassment, and exclusion in all their forms—whether based on race, gender, sexuality, ability, class, religion, or any other identity.

By embracing this commitment, a space becomes more than just a gathering point—it transforms into a place of trust, solidarity, and mutual care. It signals to all who enter that their well-being matters, their voice is welcome, and they are part of a community actively working to build equity and respect.

Safer Spaces Place Commitment Overview

We commit to building and protecting a space where every individual feels welcome, respected, and safe. This space is for learning, connection, creativity, and growth, and it depends on the collective care and responsibility of everyone who enters.

Our commitment is built on the following principles:
1. Respect and Inclusivity
We treat all people with dignity. We recognize and honor diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives, and we actively work to center voices that are too often marginalized.

2. Accountability
We take responsibility for our words and actions. If harm occurs, we commit to listening, learning, and repairing rather than responding with denial, defensiveness, or dismissal.

3. Consent and Boundaries
We respect personal boundaries—physical, emotional, and social. Consent is ongoing and must never be assumed. Everyone has the right to say no or step away without explanation or judgment.

4. Accessibility
We strive to make this space accessible to all. This includes considering physical access, language needs, sensory experiences, and varied ways of participation.

5. Active Intervention
We do not ignore harm. When we witness discrimination, harassment, or exclusion, we will respond with care, support those affected, and work to address the behavior in ways that reduce further harm.

6. Continuous Learning
We acknowledge that creating safer spaces is an ongoing process. We will make mistakes, but we are committed to reflection, feedback, and growth, both individually and collectively.

By being here, we each share responsibility for upholding this commitment. Together, we create a place of trust, solidarity, and mutual care.
