Building Careers in the Outdoors
OUTbound Academy is a 12-month workforce development program for LGBTQ+ young adults ages 18–24 who are interested in exploring careers in New Mexico's outdoor recreation industry.
The program combines hands-on outdoor experiences with professional training, industry certifications, leadership development, and real-world work experience. Participants build the skills and confidence needed to pursue careers in outdoor recreation, parks and public lands, conservation, adventure tourism, environmental education, and related fields.
Learn by Doing
OUTbound Academy isn't just classroom learning. Participants spend time in the field
developing practical outdoor and leadership skills while learning directly from outdoor professionals.
Training may include:
- Outdoor leadership and safety
- Hiking, navigation, and trip planning
- Wilderness First Aid and CPR
- Environmental stewardship
- Professional guiding and guest services
- Workplace and leadership skills
- Career preparation and interviewingWork-based learning with outdoor employers
From Training to Employment
The goal is simple: help participants turn an interest in the outdoors into a pathway to meaningful employment.
Graduates leave with practical experience, professional skills, industry connections, and credentials that can help them pursue opportunities with outdoor recreation businesses, parks, public agencies, conservation organizations, tourism employers, or OUTbound New Mexico.

Participation in the earlier programs is not required. Eligible young adults ages 18–24 may apply directly to OUTbound Academy.
